Robert Frost

Né lontano né in profondità

Le persone sulla spiaggia
Si voltano e guardano tutte in una direzione.
Voltano il dorso alla terra
Guardano tutto il giorno verso il mare.

Per il tempo che vi mette a passare
Tiene alto il suo scafo una nave;
Il suolo lucido come uno specchio
Riflette un gabbiano immobile.

La terra può essere più varia;
Ma ovunque sia la verità -
L'acqua viene alla spiaggia
E le persone guardano il mare.

Non possono guardare lontano.
Non possono guardare in profondità.
Ma quando mai questo fu un ostacolo
Ai loro sguardi?

***

Neither out far nor in deep

The people along the sand
All turn and look one way.
They turn their back on the land.
They look at the sea all day.

As long as it takes to pass
A ship keeps raising its hull;
The wetter ground like glass
Reflects a standing gull.

The land may vary more;
But wherever the truth may be---
The water comes ashore,
And the people look at the sea.

They cannot look out far.
They cannot look in deep.
But when was that ever a bar
To any watch they keep?
